The Coaching Habit Book vs. Learning Experience: Which One is Right for You?
category: LearningWhether you’re looking to build shared language or shift behavior at scale, this guide will help you decide which version of The Coaching Habit best fits your goals—and your organization.
It’s a best-selling book, loved by millions. You’re telling your friends and colleagues about it. Your boss, another fan, thinks the concepts in The Coaching Habit have so much potential impact for the business that she wants everyone to learn about it. And she wants you to be the one to take the lead.
But when you sit down and start to think about it, you realize you have more questions than answers. How do you make this work across the entire organization? What kind of experience do you build? How will you know if your employees get it? Where do you even start?
At Box of Crayons, we’ve spent a lot of time thinking about these questions. Which isn’t surprising given that our learning experiences are based on the book. But what’s the difference between The Coaching Habit book and our learning experiences, and which is better suited for you and your organization?
The Coaching Habit book is an excellent way to learn about the power of curiosity on your own, and gives you space for deep reflection. It also provides flexibility to digest the information on your terms and is cost-effective. And let’s face it, reading is fun!
But there are also limitations to the book format, especially if you’re looking to scale across your organization or have specific challenges you’re trying to address. Content is great for learning, but content alone doesn’t drive change, no matter how good it is.
If you want behavior change, then you also need great learning design and practice.
When developing The Coaching Habit learning experiences, our team of experts spent a lot of time thinking about what makes learning stick and creating experiences based on those principles. Great ideas spark motivation and interest, yet behavior change takes practice, time, and support.
And because we understand that each learner is different, we’ve tailored the experiences to be contextualized for different learners and different ways of learning, with concepts and examples appropriate for the role. And whether your employees are learning in a classroom, on Zoom, on your LMS, or through a customized learning journey your organization has built with Box of Crayons, our team of experts is here to support you and your organization's goals.
We’ve also made strategic choices about what to include and exclude based on adult learning best practices, client feedback, and the most up-to-date research. For example, there are some concepts —The Drama Triangle or Tribe, Expectation, Rank, and Autonomy (TERA)—that are in the book but not the learning experience. There are also new concepts—The 3 Coach-Like Moments—that are taught exclusively by Box of Crayons. We’re always updating our experiences to reflect what learners expect and what clients tell us makes the most impact.
Before you decide which option makes sense for you, it's important to figure out what you’re actually trying to achieve. Is it shared awareness? Are you looking to drive behavior change? Or is there a skill gap you’re trying to address?
Chances are, if you’re looking for a quick and easy intro to these concepts and a way to have some shared language, hosting a book club for your team might make sense. Or you could keep it simple and gift the book to all employees as part of their onboarding package. Shared moments and language can build strong connections, even without a structured program.
If behavior change and skill-building are what your organization is after, then a structured learning experience might be right for you. Learning design principles, outlines, workbooks, expert facilitators, built-in practice, etc, all of these enable your employees to not only learn but apply what they’ve learned with their peers and other team members. To test out new behaviors together and see how those changes can make a positive difference in the way they work.
You could even combine both and provide the book to your employees as a fun way to kick off the learning at your organization.
