3 Ways to Be a Better People Manager

category: Leadership

Being a People Manager is hard. We all struggle with it sometimes. If you’re trying to be better or know someone who is, here are three quick things you can do today.

1) Turn answers into questions

Next time someone comes to you with an issue or a question, free yourself of the need to jump in with a solution or an immediate answer. Instead, ask a few open-ended questions. You will be amazed at how quickly this habit empowers team members.

2) Reframe feedback

We associate feedback with criticism and avoid it. Try reframing it as a dialogue; both parties share an observation and its impact, then ask questions to clarify and support each other. Something like, “Hey, I noticed X. It seems to be causing Y and Z. How do you see it? How can I help?” Your team members will start to feel safer and open to making changes.

3) Encourage experimentation

Part of your job is setting priorities and creating structure. But don't overlook those areas where you can encourage employees to experiment independently. What projects might push their interests and bring out their superpowers? Let them try out their own ideas sometimes. Your team will be more engaged if they have some self-directed work.

People managing is one of the hardest and most important jobs you will ever have. Here’s the good news: You don’t need to have all the answers all the time. Instead, find a balance of great questions, useful feedback, and encouragement. Soon, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a self-sufficient and innovative group.
